Trump Administration Introduces New Rule Limiting Duration of Student Visas
The Trump administration has announced a new rule that limits the duration of stay for international students on F-1 visas in the United States. Previously, students could remain in the U.S. for the duration of their studies, but the new rule caps the initial admission period at four years. To extend their stay beyond this period, students must apply to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or leave and re-enter the country. The rule, set to take effect on September 15, also restricts students from starting a new program at the same or lower academic level after completing their current program. The DHS cites a rise in international students, overstays, fraud, and national security concerns as reasons for the change.
