Kenyan President Ruto Announces New Railway Stations for Kenya-Tanzania SGR Extension
Kenyan President William Ruto has announced plans to construct new railway stations in Mwatate, Bura, Mwakitau, and Taveta towns. These stations are part of a proposed extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Voi to Tanzania. Speaking to residents in Taita Taveta County, President Ruto confirmed that the railway project is already progressing towards Mwakitau. He emphasized that these new stations would facilitate easier transportation of people and goods, particularly for traders, between Kenya and Tanzania. The government has allocated approximately Ksh5 billion for this SGR extension project. This initiative is distinct from the ongoing rehabilitation of the 130-kilometer Voi-Taveta Metre Gauge Railway (MGR), which aims to restore an important transport corridor connecting Kenya to northern Tanzania.
