Zimbabwe Unveils Climate-Resilient Wheat Variety Amidst El Niño Drought Concerns
Seed Co-op Africa has launched a new high-yield SW9104 wheat variety in Harare, Zimbabwe. This initiative is part of a broader six-pillar strategy by Zimbabwe's Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development to mitigate the anticipated effects of an El Niño-induced drought. The SW9104 variety is designed to achieve yields of up to 10.5 tonnes per hectare under optimal conditions and is intended to perform consistently across various soil types and climatic conditions. Professor Obert Jiri, permanent secretary in the Ministry, emphasized the government's role in facilitating agricultural development, particularly through irrigation investment. The new wheat variety is also positioned to contribute to regional export markets and reduce Zimbabwe's reliance on wheat imports. This launch is one component of a comprehensive drought-readiness push, which also includes piloting cloud seeding and rebuilding strategic grain reserves to nearly a million tonnes.
