The senators argue that such practices profit from disasters and could incentivize harmful actions. The letter sent to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) highlights the ethical concerns of monetizing human suffering and the potential for creating 'perverse incentives.' The senators are pressing the CFTC to implement regulations to prevent unrestricted betting on wildfires. Platforms like Polymarket have expanded beyond traditional sports betting to include wagers on real-world events, including wildfires, which has raised significant ethical questions.
