Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro Imposes New Restrictions on Data Center Development
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has signed an executive order that places new restrictions on data center development within the state. This action comes in response to growing concerns from Pennsylvania residents regarding the potential impacts of data centers on communities, the environment, and utility bills. The order mandates that developers meet stringent standards related to energy costs, environmental protection, transparency, and community engagement before any projects can proceed. Additionally, the executive order removes AI data center proposals from Pennsylvania's fast-track permitting program and prohibits the use of nondisclosure agreements associated with these projects. Governor Shapiro emphasized that developers must agree to these strict requirements and secure community approval to gain the Commonwealth's support, stating that large companies can afford to be good neighbors and follow the rules.
