Northeast Farmers Face Challenges with Abrupt Weather Changes
Farmers across the Northeast are dealing with significant weather fluctuations that have impacted their crops. An unusual warm spell in early April, with temperatures reaching the 90s°F (around 32°C) in cities like New York and Philadelphia, was followed by a sharp drop to the 50s°F (around 10°C) and even snow in some areas. This sudden change has forced flower and fruit farmers to adjust their operations. For instance, at Understory Farm in Bridport, Vermont, tulips bloomed earlier than expected, requiring early harvesting and storage. Similarly, in Ohio, early budding of peach and apple trees at Apple Hill Orchards was disrupted by a freeze, damaging some peach varieties. The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for several states, highlighting the ongoing risk of frost.
