Illinois Sets New Tornado Record with 207 Events in 2026
Illinois has experienced an unprecedented tornado season in 2026, with at least 207 tornadoes reported as of August 12, according to Victor Gensini, Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Convective Storms at Northern Illinois University. This figure surpasses the state's previous annual record and is more than three times its 20-year average. Preliminary data also indicates 241 tornado reports year-to-date, putting Illinois on track to potentially break the all-time national state record for tornadoes, currently held by Texas. The year began with a significant tornado on March 10, which produced a record-breaking 6.6-inch hailstone. Experts attribute the high tornado activity to a combination of factors, including favorable jet stream positioning, heat, and humidity. The National Weather Service has issued 463 tornado warnings for Illinois so far, exceeding the combined total of warnings from Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska.
