Russian Publishing House Uses AI to Censor Books Following New Laws
Following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin implemented stringent censorship laws. In response, a major Russian publishing house, Eksmo-AST group, has deployed artificial intelligence to identify and remove content from its vast catalog that could violate these new restrictive criteria. Oleg Novikov, the group's president, stated that the AI conducted approximately 20,000 checks, leading to 600 volumes being sent for external expert review. This technological approach aims to streamline the process of complying with the updated censorship regulations, which require publishers to scrutinize thousands of previously published works. The move highlights the increasing integration of AI into state-controlled information environments, particularly in the context of wartime censorship.
