Supreme Court Likely to Hear Case on Trump Administration's Immigration Detention Policy
The Trump administration's interpretation of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigration Responsibility Act (IIRAIRA) has led to the detention of thousands of individuals without bond hearings. This policy, enacted last summer, treats long-term residents as if they have just crossed the border, making them eligible for detention without a bond hearing. The policy has been challenged in multiple federal appeals courts, resulting in a split decision among the circuits. The ACLU and other advocates argue that this interpretation coerces detainees into self-deportation by holding them in harsh conditions far from their families. The Supreme Court is expected to resolve the issue due to the circuit split.
