Smithsonian and Library of Congress Utilize AI to Connect Revolutionary-Era Records
A new collaborative project between the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress, named 'Revolution Crossroads,' is employing artificial intelligence (AI) to establish connections between objects and documents from the Revolutionary era. This initiative aims to integrate museum artifacts, newspapers, letters, military records, and other archival materials that have historically been housed in separate collections. Researchers are focusing on records from 1770 to 1810, encompassing the American Revolution and the early years of the United States. The primary goal is to uncover links across these disparate collections to provide deeper insights into everyday life and the formation of communities during this pivotal period. The Library of Congress notes that this partnership is designed to test AI's capability to identify patterns and create new avenues for exploring historical collections, making some of its data and search tools publicly available.
