German Chancellor Proposes EU 'Associate Membership' for Ukraine to Aid Peace Talks
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has proposed that the European Union offer 'associate membership' to Ukraine. This proposal aims to revitalize stalled peace negotiations with Russia and expedite Ukraine's EU accession process. Under this plan, Ukraine would participate in EU meetings without voting rights and have non-voting 'associate members' in the European Commission and Parliament. This initiative is intended to go beyond the current Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed optimism about the progress in accession talks, emphasizing the importance of this development for Ukraine. However, Hungary has previously blocked the opening of negotiations, though a change in government may alter this stance. The proposal also suggests a 'snap-back mechanism' to address any democratic backsliding by Ukraine.
