Australia's Green Iron Ambitions Hinge on China's Steel Decarbonisation Path
Australia is positioning itself as a leader in the production of green iron, which is iron produced using renewable electricity and hydrogen instead of fossil fuels. This ambition is largely dependent on China's approach to decarbonising its steel industry, as China is the world's largest steel producer. The Australian government anticipates that China's steel decarbonisation will create a significant market for low-emissions iron. However, there is a risk that Australia may misjudge the timing and scale of this opportunity if it misunderstands China's decarbonisation strategy. Unlike Europe or Japan, China is expected to enhance the efficiency of its existing blast furnaces, increase scrap usage, and gradually introduce electric arc furnaces and hydrogen projects, rather than completely overhauling its production methods.
