Migrants Overwhelm Ceuta as Hundreds Swim from Morocco
Hundreds of migrants have been swimming from Morocco to the Spanish territory of Ceuta, overwhelming local border security. This surge has been described as unusual by Ceuta authorities, with over 1,500 migrants, including adults and minors, reaching the territory by sea in recent days. The influx has led to the saturation of reception centers, forcing many migrants to sleep outside. The Spanish Supreme Court recently ruled that migrants arriving by sea cannot be immediately pushed back without due process, unlike those crossing by land. This legal change, however, is not believed to be the primary cause of the surge. The timing of the crossings coincides with a recent meeting between Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, reminiscent of a similar crisis in May 2021.
