Defense Department's FY27 Budget Leaves Some Services Without Unfunded Requirements
The U.S. Defense Department's unfunded priority lists for fiscal year 2027 have been submitted to Congress, revealing a significant shift from previous years. Notably, several military services and combatant commands, including the Marine Corps, Space Force, and Strategic Command, reported no unfunded requirements. This change is attributed to the unprecedented $1.5 trillion defense budget request for FY27, which marks a 44% increase from the previous year. The Army, Navy, and Air Force did submit unfunded requests totaling approximately $3 billion, primarily for military construction projects. The Air Force's list includes 41 projects, with a top priority of $26.3 million for fuel tanks in the Northern Mariana Islands. The Navy's most expensive request is $169 million for an expansion at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington.
