Rare Earthquake Shakes Gulf of Mexico, Felt in South Florida
A rare earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck the southern Gulf of Mexico near Cuba on Monday, June 2026, at approximately 2 p.m. (Source time: Tue, 11 Aug 2026 19:30:56 GMT). The epicenter was located about 65 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba. The tremors were felt across parts of South Florida, including Miami and Tampa, leading to the evacuation of multiple buildings such as Miami-Dade's Stephen P. Clark Government Center and the Dadeland Metrorail Station. According to William Barnhart, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), this earthquake is the largest ever recorded in the Gulf of Mexico using modern instruments, which have been in use since the 1950s. No tsunami was generated as a result of the earthquake.
