Pope Leo XIV Appoints Evelio Menjivar-Ayala as Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston
Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Bishop Mark E. Brennan from the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and appointed Bishop Evelio Menjivar-Ayala as his successor. Menjivar-Ayala, previously an auxiliary bishop in Washington, is known for his advocacy on immigration and social justice issues. The appointment was announced by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the apostolic nuncio to the United States. The Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston encompasses a large area in West Virginia, and Menjivar-Ayala's leadership is expected to focus on community engagement and social justice.
