IMLS Survives Legal Challenge but Faces Budget Threats Under Trump Administration
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has survived a legal challenge against President Trump's efforts to eliminate the agency. The U.S. Department of Justice reached a settlement with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union and the American Library Association, allowing the IMLS to continue its work. However, the agency remains under threat as Trump's proposed 2027 federal budget seeks to eliminate its funding. This is part of a broader pattern of attempts to cut funding for cultural institutions, including the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
