Santa Barbara Urged to Implement Workforce Housing Strategy to Address Affordability Crisis
Santa Barbara is facing a housing affordability crisis, particularly affecting essential workers such as nurses, teachers, and service industry employees. The high cost of living and insufficient wages have made it difficult for these workers to afford local housing, leading to a call for a Workforce Housing Stabilization Program. This proposed program would utilize existing housing stock more effectively, offering incentives for property owners to lease to local workers at capped rents. The strategy aims to convert short-term rentals into long-term housing and encourage the development of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) linked to workforce housing. Similar programs in other California cities, like Truckee and Mill Valley, have successfully increased workforce housing availability through voluntary participation and financial incentives.
