Florida Resident Convicted of Smuggling Aircraft Parts to Sanctioned Russian Airline Aeroflot
A Russian citizen residing in Florida has been found guilty on all 12 counts related to smuggling nearly $1 million worth of aircraft spare parts to the Russian flag carrier Aeroflot, which is under sanctions. The individual, Alexander Mamonov, 62, a former Aeroflot employee, established a company named Dar Sky to procure legitimate spare parts from U.S. suppliers. He then deceived these suppliers into believing the parts were destined for companies in countries not subject to import restrictions. For instance, in January 2023, Mamonov arranged for 300 oil filters to be sent to an intermediary company in the United Arab Emirates, from where they were subsequently shipped to Aeroflot in Moscow. Similarly, in August 2023, he procured an over-temperature shut-off valve from a U.S. company, which was routed through China before reaching Russia.
