Russia Allegedly Conducts Phishing Attack on German Officials via Signal App
Russia is suspected of orchestrating a large-scale phishing attack targeting high-profile German politicians, diplomats, and military officers through the Signal messaging app. According to German media, at least 300 accounts belonging to political figures, including several cabinet members, were targeted. The attackers posed as 'Signal Support' and requested victims to enter their PIN, click on a link, or scan a QR code, which allowed the hackers access to the victims' chats and address books. German federal prosecutors have been investigating the attack since mid-April, but have not disclosed further details. Germany's domestic intelligence service, BfV, and its cybersecurity office, BSI, had previously warned of potential state-sponsored attacks on messaging apps like Signal. Moscow has denied any involvement in espionage or sabotage activities.
