Louisiana Midterm Primaries: Key Races and Trump's Influence on GOP
Louisiana voters are participating in a revamped state primary system to decide the political fate of Republican U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, who is targeted for defeat by President Trump. The primary, which is a departure from the previous jungle primary system, will see candidates running in separate party primaries. This change was implemented for certain offices in 2024 but only took effect in 2026. The U.S. House races were postponed after the Supreme Court struck down the state's congressional map, which included a majority Black district favoring Democrats. Despite this, U.S. House races will appear on ballots, but votes will not be counted. The primary is significant as it tests Trump's influence over the GOP, especially after Cassidy's vote to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial. Cassidy faces competition from state Treasurer John Fleming and U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow, who has Trump's endorsement.
