Maine's Fishing Industry Supported by Free Fillet Program Amid Economic Struggles
Maine's groundfishing industry, historically significant but struggling due to overfishing and economic pressures, is receiving a boost from the Fishermen Feeding Mainers program. Initiated in late 2020, this program purchases locally caught fish, processes it, and donates the fillets to schools and food banks across Maine. With over $4 million spent on 1.3 million pounds of fish, the initiative supports local fishermen by stabilizing prices and providing a reliable market. The program also aims to foster a new generation of seafood consumers by introducing fish into school meals, overcoming initial hesitations from parents and staff. The Maine Coast Fishermen's Association, which operates the program, has distributed over 1.8 million meals since its inception, helping to alleviate food insecurity while supporting the local fishing economy.
