Hurricane Watch Issued for Hawaii as Tropical Storm Lala Strengthens
Tropical Storm Lala is intensifying and is expected to become a Category One hurricane as it approaches Hawaii, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) [USA Today, 2026-08-13]. The storm, currently located about 870 miles east-southeast of Honolulu, is moving west-northwest at 9 mph and is forecast to bring high winds, heavy rain, and large waves to the Hawaiian Islands starting the night of August 14. A hurricane watch has been issued for the Big Island, with potential impacts including up to 20 inches of rain in some areas, flash flooding, and waves exceeding 15 feet. The NHC is also monitoring other tropical disturbances in the Atlantic and Pacific, though none are expected to impact the U.S. mainland at this time.
