Matt Clifford Resigns as ARIA Chair Amidst Conflict of Interest Concerns with Anthropic Role
Matt Clifford has announced his resignation as the chair of the UK's Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), effective November 6, 2026. This decision comes less than a week after his appointment as managing director of international affairs for AI giant Anthropic, which sparked warnings of a "clear conflict of interest." Clifford, a key architect of the UK government's AI strategy, initially intended to retain both roles, with safeguards in place to manage potential conflicts. However, scrutiny from Parliament, particularly from Dame Chi Onwurah, Labour MP and chair of the House of Commons Science, Innovation and Technology Committee, led to his reversal. ARIA invests taxpayer money in high-risk scientific and technological research, including AI, while Clifford's role at Anthropic involves engaging with governments outside North America. He stated his decision was to prevent his new role from becoming a "distraction from ARIA's incredible work."
