Maldivian Military Diver Dies During Search for Missing Italian Divers in Underwater Cave
A Maldivian military diver, Mohamed Mahudhee, died while participating in a search operation for four Italian divers believed to be trapped in an underwater cave in the Maldives. The incident occurred in Vaavu Atoll, where the group of five Italian divers, including Monica Montefalcone, Giorgia Sommacal, Federico Gualtieri, Muriel Oddenino, and Gianluca Benedetti, were exploring a cave at a depth of about 50 meters. The recreational diving limit in the Maldives is 30 meters. The Italian Foreign Ministry is coordinating with the Divers Alert Network to support recovery operations. The search has been hampered by rough weather, and the cause of the divers' deaths is under investigation. The Maldives tourism ministry has suspended the operating license of the vessel 'Duke of York,' which was part of the expedition.
