Austin Beutner Withdraws from L.A. Mayor's Race Following Daughter's Death
Austin Beutner, the former Los Angeles schools superintendent, has announced his withdrawal from the Los Angeles mayoral race. This decision comes a month after the tragic death of his 22-year-old daughter, Emily Beutner. Beutner, who was one of several candidates challenging incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the upcoming June 2 primary, cited the need to prioritize his family during this difficult time. Emily Beutner passed away on January 6, and the cause of death is still under investigation by the Los Angeles County medical examiner's office. Beutner's campaign had focused on criticizing Mayor Bass's handling of the Palisades fire, which had severely impacted his family, destroying his mother-in-law's home and damaging his own. Despite his withdrawal, Beutner emphasized the ongoing challenges facing Los Angeles, such as affordability and safety, and the need for new leadership and ideas.
