Calexico City Council Proposes Special Public Safety Tax to Support Police and Fire Services
The Calexico City Council has introduced a proposal for a special public safety sales tax aimed at benefiting the city's police and fire services over a 20-year period. The proposed tax rate could be up to 0.50 percent on the dollar. This initiative, brought forward by City Councilmember Lisa Tylenda, is intended to address funding gaps in staffing, equipment, and facility upgrades for these critical services. The council plans to revisit the proposal for further discussion on March 18. The proposal comes in response to previous issues with a regular sales tax, which was not restricted and did not adequately fund the intended services. Both the Calexico Police Chief Armando Orozco and Fire Chief Juan Contreras have expressed support for the tax, highlighting the need for improved facilities and increased staffing.
