Hungarian Political Shift: András Baka Nominated as New President Amidst Post-Orbán Reforms
In Hungary, a significant political shift is underway as András Baka, a former judge known for his opposition to Viktor Orbán's policies, has been nominated to become the new president. This development follows the recent electoral defeat of Orbán, leading to a radical dismantling of his era by the new Prime Minister, Péter Magyar. Baka, who previously served as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights and as President of Hungary's Supreme Court, was removed from his position in 2011 after criticizing Orbán's judicial reforms. The European Court of Human Rights later ruled that his dismissal violated freedom of expression. Magyar's government, which holds a two-thirds majority in parliament, is expected to confirm Baka's presidency, as there are no other candidates. This move is part of a broader effort to reform Hungary's judicial system and other institutions that were heavily influenced by Orbán.
