Rockefeller University Research Highlights Arginine's Role in Enhancing Immune Defense
Researchers at Rockefeller University, led by Sohail Tavazoie, have discovered that the amino acid arginine plays a crucial role in immune defense against tumors and viruses. Their study, published in Cell, reveals that arginine deficiency can stall the production of MHC-1 proteins, which are essential for alerting the immune system to threats like mutating cells or invading viruses. The research indicates that moderate arginine supplementation could restore MHC-1 production, potentially enhancing immune responses. This finding is significant as it suggests that arginine could be used in combination with other therapies to treat cancer and viral infections.
