Rockefeller University Research Highlights Arginine's Role in Enhancing Immune Defense
Researchers at Rockefeller University, led by Sohail Tavazoie, have discovered that the amino acid arginine plays a crucial role in immune defense against tumors and viruses. Their study, published in Cell, reveals that arginine deficiency can stall the production of MHC-1 proteins, which are essential for alerting the immune system to threats like mutating cells or invading viruses. The research indicates that moderate arginine supplementation could restore MHC-1 production, potentially enhancing immune responses. This finding is significant as it suggests that arginine could be used in combination with other therapies to treat cancer and viral infections. The study was supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Weill Cancer East Hub.
