Potential Tropical Storm May Bring Heavy Rain and Coastal Flooding to Southern California
Meteorologists are closely monitoring a developing storm system, currently named 95-E, in the eastern Pacific Ocean near the Baja California peninsula. If it strengthens into a tropical storm, it will be named Marie. The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Diego notes that the storm is unlikely to maintain hurricane or tropical storm status by the time it reaches Southern California. However, it could bring significant moisture, heavy showers, thunderstorms, and dangerous coastal waves over the Labor Day weekend. Coastal flooding is a concern, particularly with high tides expected on Saturday and Sunday. The storm is part of an active hurricane season in the eastern Pacific, potentially influenced by a developing El Niño weather pattern (Los Angeles Times, 2026-09-01).
