Federal Judge Overturns President Trump's Wind Energy Ban, Impacting Renewable Sector
A federal judge has vacated an executive order issued by President Trump that banned wind energy projects in the United States. The ruling came from the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, which found the order unlawful. The executive order, issued on the first day of Trump's administration, halted leasing, permitting, and approvals for wind projects, significantly impacting the wind energy industry. This decision follows an amicus brief filed by the Sierra Club and nine other environmental organizations, arguing that the order was arbitrary, lacked scientific basis, and threatened U.S. climate goals and public health. The wind energy sector, which employed nearly 150,000 Americans at the end of 2024, faced job losses due to the administration's actions, with at least 17,000 jobs in jeopardy in the offshore wind industry alone.
