Guyana Launches Criminal Probe After Ferry Capsizes, Leaving Many Missing
In Guyana, authorities have initiated a criminal investigation following the capsizing of a ferry, MV Barima, which was reportedly overloaded. The incident occurred off the Essequibo coast as the ferry was traveling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma. Of the 116 passengers and 17 crew members listed, only 67 people have been rescued, with 32 not appearing on the manifest. The government suspects more passengers were aboard than documented. The captain and a crew member tested positive for marijuana and are in police custody. The government is focusing on the accuracy of the passenger manifest, cargo loading, and crew conduct. Prime Minister Mark Phillips emphasized accountability for any negligence or misconduct.
