Philippines and China Clash Over South China Sea Maritime Incident
Tensions have escalated between the Philippines and China following a maritime incident in the South China Sea. The Philippine foreign affairs secretary, Maria Theresa Lazaro, lodged a protest against what she described as 'unacceptable actions' by Chinese personnel. In response, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi accused the Philippines of ramming Chinese law-enforcement vessels. The incident occurred at the Second Thomas Shoal, a contested area in the South China Sea. Both countries have a history of maritime confrontations in this region, which China claims almost entirely, despite a 2016 arbitral ruling invalidating those claims.
