Speaker Johnson Reverses Stance on Senate's Homeland Security Funding Plan Amid Shutdown
Speaker Mike Johnson has reversed his previous criticism of the Senate's plan to fund the Department of Homeland Security, excluding immigration enforcement operations. Initially, Johnson had dismissed the plan as inadequate, but he now supports it. This shift comes as President Trump announced an order to pay Homeland Security employees affected by the ongoing partial government shutdown, which has lasted 48 days. The Senate's plan, led by Majority Leader John Thune, aims to fund most of the department, excluding ICE and Border Patrol, which Republicans plan to address separately. The House is yet to pass the Senate's proposal, and the funding lapse is expected to continue into the following week.
