Norfolk Pit Bull Incident Raises Questions on Use of Deadly Force
Four pit bulls escaped a collapsed backyard fence on Lind Street in Norfolk, Virginia, on a recent Sunday, leading to an incident where they chased two adults and caused minor injuries. During the event, a neighbor opened fire, resulting in the death of one dog, a 6-month-old named Gigi, and injury to another, Rain. The dogs' owner, Kwini Scott, is questioning the necessity of deadly force, asserting that her dogs were not aggressive but merely attempting to play. Scott attributes the escape to an accidental fence collapse, not intentional roaming. Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney Ramin Fatehi stated that Virginia's self-defense law applies equally to threats from humans or animals, provided there is an immediate threat of serious bodily injury or death. Norfolk police have classified the incident as a "vicious animal incident," and the case will be presented to the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office for a decision on potential criminal charges.
