LIRR Track Fire Causes Major Disruptions for Commuters in New York
A track fire at New York Penn Station on Thursday led to significant disruptions for Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) commuters. The fire, which occurred inside the East River Tunnel, was extinguished within two hours but caused extensive damage, impacting train services. As a result, all eastbound services were halted, and westbound services to Manhattan were suspended on Friday. Amtrak, which owns the station and infrastructure, is conducting repairs, and LIRR trains from Long Island are being rerouted to Grand Central, Atlantic Terminal, or ending at Jamaica Station. The fire also affected NJ Transit, with all Midtown Direct services diverted to Hoboken. The MTA has communicated service changes to customers via the Train Time app.
