Australia Enforces Age Verification for Minors on Social Media Platforms
Australia has implemented a new law requiring social media platforms to verify the age of users under 16. This measure, effective from December 10, mandates platforms like Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to ensure users verify their age through methods such as bank verification, government-issued photo ID, or selfies checked using facial age estimation technology. The law aims to protect minors from inappropriate content and interactions online. Platforms failing to comply with these regulations could face fines up to $32.8 million. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance online safety for children, with similar measures being considered in other regions, including California and New York State.
