Instructure Faces Cybersecurity Breach, Disrupting Canvas Access for Schools
Instructure, the company behind the widely used Canvas learning management system, experienced a significant cybersecurity breach that led to a widespread outage affecting numerous educational institutions. The breach, attributed to the hacker group ShinyHunters, compromised data from students and employees across approximately 9,000 schools globally, including in the United States. The breach involved names, email addresses, and student ID numbers, but not sensitive information like passwords or financial data. In response, Instructure took Canvas offline to investigate and mitigate the issue, particularly affecting California campuses such as UCLA and UC Berkeley. The disruption occurred during a critical period as students prepared for finals, causing significant inconvenience and prompting schools to seek alternative methods for accessing course materials.
