EU Proposes Easing State Aid Rules for Small Media Outlets
The European Union is moving to revise its state aid rulebook, specifically the General Block Exemption Regulation (GBER), to allow member countries to fund small local media without requiring prior approval from Brussels. A draft of the updated 200-page regulation, obtained by POLITICO, indicates that governments will be able to provide financial assistance to small and medium-sized press outlets. This initiative aims to support local and independent journalism, which the European Commission views as crucial for safeguarding media pluralism, cultural and linguistic diversity, democratic participation, and citizens' access to reliable information.
