Greenwood Police Officer Killed in Pursuit After Teen Flees Traffic Stop
Greenwood Police Officer Don 'DJ' Keller was killed in a crash during a police pursuit on Monday. The incident occurred when a 15-year-old driver attempted to evade law enforcement during a traffic stop. The teenager fled the scene, crossing into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with Officer Keller's patrol vehicle at the intersection of East Cambridge Avenue and Ames Street South. The crash also involved two passengers, aged 17 and 18, who were in the vehicle with the driver. All three were hospitalized, with the third passenger later released and taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia. Greenwood Police Chief T.J. Chaudoin defended Keller's actions, stating that the officer was performing his duty and had done nothing wrong. Keller, a military veteran, had served with the Greenwood Police Department for three years. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash.
