Jury Awards $49.5 Million to Family of Boeing 737 MAX Crash Victim
A jury in Chicago has awarded $49.5 million in damages to the family of Samya Stumo, a 24-year-old American who died in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crash involving a Boeing 737 MAX. The crash, which occurred shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa, resulted in the deaths of all 157 people on board. This incident followed a similar crash involving a Lion Air flight in Indonesia, which killed 189 people. Both crashes were linked to the Boeing 737 MAX 8 model, leading to the grounding of the aircraft for nearly two years while system upgrades were implemented. Boeing faced a criminal fraud charge related to the crashes but avoided prosecution by agreeing to pay over $1.1 billion in fines and $445 million in compensation to victims' families. The Stumo family pursued their claim through the court process after failing to reach a settlement with Boeing.
