Middle East Conflicts Threaten Global Oil Supply, Exacerbating Refined Fuel Shortages
The ongoing conflicts in the Middle East are significantly impacting global oil markets, with potential chokepoints threatening to disrupt supply chains. The U.S. and Iran have temporarily paused hostilities in the Persian Gulf to engage in diplomatic talks, while Iran and Oman are negotiating to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran-backed Houthi rebels are posing threats to ships in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial route for Saudi oil exports. Additionally, Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil infrastructure and tankers in the Black Sea have further strained the market. According to Susan Bell, senior vice president of downstream research at Rystad Energy, the situation with refined fuels like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel is more critical than crude oil supplies. The inventories of these refined products have been significantly depleted, leading to a sharp increase in the crack spreads between oil and fuel prices.
