What is the story about?
Mirabai Chanu continued her purple patch at the Commonwealth Games and won her third consecutive gold medal at the quadrennial event. The legendary weightlifter
won her fourth CWG medal in Glasgow by lifting a total of 190kg in the 48kg women's event. She ended the country's wait for a gold medal win with her historic lift. Mirabai couldn't control her emotions after her historic win and was in tears during the National Anthem. Under the CWG and Olympic rules, the gold medallist's National Anthem is played during the podium ceremony. India have won one gold, one silver and one bronze medal in CWG 2026 so far. Jhandu Kumar opened India's tally with a bronze medal. He finished with 130.9 points to finish on the podium.
Weightlifter Rishikanta Singh won the first silver medal for the country in the men's 60kg category. He was close to winning the gold and missed out by a whisker.
Mirabai Chanu's performance
Mirabai Chanu delivered her best performance in the medal event and there was no one close to her. She lifted 85kg in the snatch event. She followed up with two lifts of 82kg each. Her last lift wasn't counted.
Mirabai did the unthinkable and lifted 105kg in the very first attempt in the clean and jerk, finishing with a total of 190kg. No other weightlifter even managed to lift 170kg.
Before her event, Mirabi had said that she wouldn't give her 100 percent as her focus was on the Asian Games. "I will not give my full effort in the Commonwealth Games. My focus is the Asian Games, which are very near. I am training according to that. So my performance and effort here will depend on that plan," she told PTI. Her performance was enough to earn India their first gold medal at CWG 2026.
Nigeria's Ruth Asuquo Nyong won the silver medal by lifting 168kg while Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry won the bronze medal by lifting 167kg in her CWG debut.
