What is the story about?
The highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C opener between Brazil and Morocco ended in a competitive 1-1 draw at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
In the only match of the group stage played between two teams in the top 10 of the FIFA rankings, the play was defined by two moments of spectacular individual brilliance. Both heavyweights thus had to share points.
A Frantic First Half
The game began with high energy, wth Morocco looking strong, against a hapless Brazil who could not ever secure a strong of passes. The Moroccans took advantage and drew first blood in the 21st minute. After a rapid counter-attack, Brahim Diaz passed a perfect ball through the heart of the Brazillian defense to find Ismael Saibari. Saibari then showed a moment of individual brilliance, as he chipped the ball over goalkeeper Alisson Becker who charged towards him. From outside the box, he scored one of the goals of the tournament so far.
Brazil refused to stay down for long. Just 11 minutes after falling behind, Vinicius Junior delivered a moment of pure magic to level the score. He received the ball on the left flank from Bruno Guimaraes, and then dribbled past the Moroccan defense only to smash a stunning, curling effort into the roof of the net from an acute angle. This was the 10th goal of the star Real Madrid man for his country, in his 50th international appearance.
A Tactical Second Half
After the attacking first half, the action transitioned into a physical battle in the second. Morocco then went on the defensive in the second half, heavily restricting Brazil's attacking space despite the five-time champions dominating possession and creating chances.
Both managers turned to their benches to find a spark, with Brazil bringing on Fabinho and Danilo to maintain midfield control and manage their bookings.
Brazil's best opportunity to snatch a victory came when Raphinha nearly capitalized on a dangerously slow Moroccan backpass, but goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was quick off his line to clear the danger a
Despite a tense ten minutes of stoppage time, neither defense surrendered to the mounting pressure. The final whistle confirmed the stalemate, leaving both teams tied in Group C.
This continued Morocco's record of not winning any of their first matches of the FIFA World Cup in history.
