Tejaswin Shankar scripted history by winning a bronze medal in the decathlon event at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Glasgow. The achievement is remarkable
because he had picked up a knee injury during the high jump event, putting his CWG campaign or even his season in jeopardy. This was a big blow to Shankar because he'd won a bronze in high jump in Birmingham, and he was carrying a billion hopes of a medal. Shankar decided to stay and fight, and he came out with flying colours, winning a medal against all odds. What kept Tejaswin Shankar's fight alive was his hunger for success and Sreeshankar's advice to take one event at a time. ‘Dil Maange More,” Shankar said in PTI video. "I just want more. I didn't want to leave Glasgow empty-handed. Sreeshankar's advice to take one event at a time kept me going after the high jump setback. We'll try to be healthier, fitter and go for gold at the Asian Games," he added in a PTI video. Imagine if Tejaswin had given up and returned home after the injury; it might have cost India two medals. Instead, he decided to stay and helped Sarvesh Kushare win a silver in high jump. “I wanted to clear the height in my first attempt itself, but, during 2.25 metre, my rhythm was affected, and my stride became shorter. Then TJ [Tejaswin Shankar] told me to move forward in my run-up, and that helped,” Kushare had revealed. Tejaswin even earned praise from the Indian PM Modi. “Indian athletes continue to create history and make our nation proud! Tejaswin Shankar wins a Bronze in the Men's Decathlon event at the Glasgow CWG. He delivered an exceptional all-round performance across 10 events. Congrats to him. May he continue to shine. My best wishes,” he wrote. Meanwhile, India have won 23 medals, including five golds, 12 silvers and six bronze at the CWG 2026.
