Bangladesh stun Australia in historic win

Bangladesh made history by defeating Australia by nine wickets in the opening Test match at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin on Sunday, August 16.

Bangladesh's triumph was their second overall against the Baggy Greens in the longest format and their first Test victory on Australian soil. Bangladesh set a modest target of 57 runs after bowling Australia out for 284 in their second innings after taking a commanding 228-run lead in the first innings. With just one wicket lost, the visitors finished the chase in just 14.2 overs. Bangladesh received a significant boost in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 standings as a result of the historic victory in Darwin. Their points percentage (PCT) has climbed from 58.33 to 66.67, and their total number of points has increased to 60. Bangladesh is still ranked fourth in the WTC points table despite the remarkable improvement. Bangladesh had won two Test matches at home against Pakistan earlier this year before their historic victory in Darwin.

Australia Retain Top Spot Despite Loss

Despite losing to Bangladesh at home, Australia has managed to hold onto the top spot in the WTC 2025–27 standings. But from 87.50 to 77.77, their PCT has drastically decreased.

In the current cycle, the 2023 WTC champions have now dropped two of their nine Test matches. It is interesting to note that both losses occurred at home.

With a points percentage (PCT) of 48.15, India is now ranked fifth in the WTC 2025–27 points table. India would stay in fifth spot even if Shubman Gill's team wins the opening Test of the current two-match series at the Galle International Stadium against Sri Lanka. Their PCT will rise from 48.15 to 53.33, nevertheless.

If Sri Lanka wins the first game of the series, they can go ahead of India in the standings. India would drop to sixth place (43.33 PCT%) if they won in Galle, raising their PCT to 53.33 and placing them in fifth.

Sri Lanka's PCT will drop to 40.00 and India's to 46.66 if the current first Test in Galle is a draw. Their positions in the WTC points table will remain unchanged notwithstanding the modifications in their individual PCTs.
