Bangladesh shock Australia in first Test

Najmul Hossain Shanto-led Bangladesh defeated Pat Cummins' Australia in the first Test of the two-match series to take a 1-0 lead. Bangladesh, who played

their first Test in Australia in 2003, had to wait for 23 years to register their first win Down Under. They had managed just one win against the Kangaroos before the Darwin Test. Cummins gave a blunt response after Australia's shocking defeat and said that Australia's struggles on the opening day cost them. "Probably that day one. You know, I thought our preparation was, you know, pretty much spot on. I thought it was excellent. So, yeah, no excuses," Cummins said. "They played really well. You know, I thought the day one wicket was doing a little bit early, but obviously got to try and find a way to bat a little bit longer than we did, and then, yeah, just couldn't penetrate with the ball. But, yeah, I thought they played really well," he added. Australia managed a score of 198 in their first innings. Barring Steve Smith, none of the Australian batters managed to breach the 30-run mark. Smith sccored 71 off 109 balls. Bangladesh scored a big total of 426 in their first innings to take a 228-run lead. Australia only managed to score 284 in their second innings, thus setting a target of 57 for the visitors. The second Test of the series will be played from August 22 to 26 in MacKay.

Bangladesh captain on famous win

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was elated with the win and credited the team's hard work for the victory. "Very happy and proud of myself and the way boys played, really proud of that. And we did a lot of hard work and really happy to win with this side," he said.

"Obviously I think that is the biggest change in Bangladesh cricket in Test format. Normally in five, six years before, the pace bowlers didn't want to play Test cricket because we didn't get enough chance to play Test cricket. But last two, three years we've been playing a lot of Test matches and boys are getting importance in the Test format. So they now want to play and they want to perform because they want to be world class," Shanto added.
