Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif questioned why an in-form Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did not get a chance, saying that Sanju Samson did not play any cricket after
being temporarily dropped from India's T20I team but was still an automatic selection in the first T20I against Afghanistan. Samson was unable to have an impact on his comeback at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, scoring just 10 runs off eight deliveries as India easily defeated Afghanistan by seven wickets. The Indian squad faced a huge selection dilemma about their starting lineup following Samson's comeback. In addition to missing the Zimbabwe tour, he was removed from the starting lineup halfway through the Twenty20 International series against England.

"What did Sanju do in between to get a chance today? Usually, when you are dropped, you play here and there and regain some form; nothing like that has happened. Why did he get a chance? That’s a massive question. Why did not you go with the same combination after Vaibhav scored runs in Zimbabwe? That’s another question," Kaif said while speaking on Cricbuzz.
"In my opinion, they are hesitating a bit; they are unsure of what their best opening combination is. The Indian team are still thinking about it. Vaibhav must be saying What did I do wrong?" Kaif added.
In the meantime, India easily defeated Afghanistan by seven wickets thanks to Arshdeep Singh's unrelenting precision and variety of deliveries, and Abhishek Sharma's merciless 82.
As India limited Afghanistan to 156/8, Arshdeep set the tone with outstanding figures of 3/19, bowling 16 dot balls from his 24 balls.
Abhishek hit seven sixes in his 32-ball innings, making the chase seem easy. India finished the chase in less than 14 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
