Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand upset the odds to ensure that India's streak of winning in the BWF World Championships extended to 10 editions in a row
as they secured the bronze medal in the ongoing edition, which took place in New Delhi over the last week as India hosted the event after a gap of 17 years. Their medal is India's first in the Women's Doubles category since 2011. Treesa and Gayatri secured a place on the podium in the same week when the Government of India's Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs confirmed that they will be awarded the Arjuna Award this year. Reflecting on the last few days, the pair labelled it as a dream week for them while claiming they were confident of winning a medal ever since they reached New Delhi. "I think 100% this is a dream week for us. I think getting this Arjuna Award and winning the medal in World Championships, and happening in the home soil, I think it's a dream come true. And I think it's a teamwork, I feel like, who was there behind us as a team who worked, getting us ready for every matches, preparing for us for that to play every crucial matches. I think this is amazing," said Treesa. "From the time we arrived here in Delhi, I think we were just super confident. That's how we wanted to be. And also like from the 64 draw, I think all the matches have been quite challenging, I'd say. Everyone's played their best game. So to be beating those pairs, because everyone's worked incredibly hard. So to be winning against them, it feels special. And even in the quarterfinals, I think, was an amazing game and we knew they weren't going to give it easy. So yeah, after we won that, I think we were super emotional. And yeah, I think we're super happy with the medal. Yeah, so happy," Gayatri added.
What Makes Gayatri And Treesha A Perfect Pair?
The duo also went in depth on what makes them a perfect pair and revealed what the other brings to the table, which complements their own strengths. Treesha claimed Gayatri is able to keep her calm while being an agressive player herself.
I think the major fact I would say that I am a little bit more aggressive player. I feel like in the crucial situation, when it's about to close the match, she comes and tells me, "Just be calm and the match is not yet finished". I think that gives me more confidence, more strength that, yeah, I need to be alert right now, like more calm and just play. I think that's one of the main things. And she's very supportive even on and off the court. When the injury times when I was going through, she was the one who was just supporting me, and I think that's a pillar for me, like a strength of pillar of my side. At that time, no one is there, like kind of a difficult situation you're going through, and it's good having someone on your side," Treesa.
"Yeah, I think definitely, I think on-court the kind of presence Treesa has is just amazing. I think sometimes when I'm calm, but this one's just out there aggressive and like she's just shouting, I think it's amazing. So I just love to be on court with her and yeah, she's super supportive as well," Gayatri elaborated.
