Asmita Dey makes judo history with gold

Asmita Dey has won the gold medal in the women's judo 48 KG category and become the first Indian judoka to become a Commonwealth champion in history on Friday

(July 31). However, Harsh Singh joined her a few minutes later by clinching gold in the Men's 60 KG category. The 23-year-old defeated Canada's Quach in the summit clash to clinch the historic spot on top of the podium. In the thrilling summit clash, Asmita pulled off a dramatic last-second move against the Canadian Judoko in the golden score to clinch the victory at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SEC) in Glasgow. This marked only India's fourth gold medal in the ongoing edition and only the second in able-bodied sport after Mirabai Chanu. Asmita got a bye in the Round of 16 and started her campaign with a stunning 100-0 win over Scotland's Ewing. Later, she defeated another home favourite, Summer Shaw, in the semi-final by Ippon to make her way to the gold medal clash.

Asmita's medal is the 12th for India in the history of Judo at the CWG since it first appeared in 1990. Harsh joined her in the elite list with his second gold. Before this edition, Indian Judokas had won five silver and six bronze medals in the history of the Commonwealth Games. Yamini Maurya will also add either a gold or silver medal to India's tally later tonight.
